No Plan, No Research—Just Booked a Hotel in Puerto Rico (Here’s What Happened)
f you read my introduction post, then you already know how we got here.
I booked a luxury hotel in Puerto Rico—last minute, with zero research.
No comparisons. No deep dives. No “best places to stay” videos on YouTube Shorts.
Just a quick decision and a hope that it would work out based on pictures alone.
When you travel like that, one thing becomes very clear:
Your hotel can make or break the entire trip.
Arrival
Ok, welcome to Puerto Rico—arriving into Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport.
The air was warm, and my skin was soaking in the sun as we waited for the Uber at the terminal.
Since I didn’t pay attention to the location of the hotel, I just saw “beach” and said, okay, great.
Looking back, the hotel is so distinctive you can actually spot it during takeoff and landing.
We ended up in Isla Verde, a stone’s throw from the airport (about 5 km).
A quick 10–15 minute drive later, we were pulling up to the hotel.
Arrival at the Hotel
As we pulled up to the hotel entrance, we were sandwiched between the hotel on the left and the beach on the right.
There’s a small pull-in driveway, and as soon as you stop, you’re met by the bellmen—doors opened for you, quick greetings, everything feeling smooth and welcoming.
You walk up a short set of stairs, and the doors are opened by staff as you enter.
We arrived around 2pm, so it was bright and sunny outside—but stepping inside, the lighting shifts immediately. It’s moodier, softer… like stepping into shade.
To the left is the reception desk.
To the right, a spacious seating area.
And straight ahead, down a corridor, are the elevators.
From that first moment, you can already make out the entire layout of the entrance—it’s all right there, simple and easy to take in.
My Travel Mindset
With no real plan and no time to overthink it, the hotel became the most important decision of the trip.
This destination was:
unplanned
last minute
That meant limited time and limited options.
Prices were either insane—like $12,000 a night—or the choices felt… questionable. Not bad, just not convincing.
I’ll be honest—I like to research. I enjoy learning about destinations, the towns, the history, what they’re known for. That emotional connection really helps sell a place for me.
But this time, I had to rely on instinct.
I have a certain eye for hotels. It’s like a sixth sense—either I scroll past immediately, or something clicks and I’m all in.
Because to me, it’s not just a hotel—it’s where I have to feel at home while I’m away from home.
And knowing I’m away from my dog, I need a space that doesn’t make me miss him even more.
I’m also someone who loves luxury on a budget.
Comfort shouldn’t feel like a splurge or a privilege—it should feel like a standard.
But we know life has its tiers.
My heart wants quality.
My pockets say:
“make more money.”
The Hotel: Aire De O:Live
Aire de O:Live is one of the newer boutique hotels in San Juan, opened in 2023.
It’s part of a locally owned group known for design-forward, sustainable luxury—a different feel from the typical big-name resorts.
That alone made it stand out to me. Especially for a last-minute booking, it felt like I found something with intention behind it.
Hotel Snapshot
Location: Isla Verde, San Juan
Opened: 2023
Vibe: Sustainable beachfront boutique
Best for: Adults-only getaway
Distance from airport: ~5 minutes
Pros:
Great location
Strong service
Stylish aesthetic
Beach access
Good amenities
Cons:
Odd room layout
Limited functional space
Elevator wait times
No room service
Small inconveniences (like no pen)
The Vibe
Quiet luxury goes to the beach here.
The details are minimal but impactful—I found myself interacting with the design in small ways. The mirrors, the books near the elevator… subtle, but intentional.
The design leans heavily into natural elements:
wood
stone
cotton
rattan
As someone who’s sensory-sensitive, I really appreciated that.
All of this sits against the turquoise Atlantic Ocean and green palm trees… wow.
It’s removed from the city’s hustle, tucked at the end of a dead-end road, which makes it feel more like an escape.
It’s the kind of place where the design isn’t loud—but you feel it in everything.
Another detail I loved: no key card—just a key band. Perfect for beach days when you don’t want to worry about losing anything.
The Room Experience
Here’s what I noticed:
We booked the Habitat de O:Live Suite.
The bed was comfortable, the pillows plush, and the views were nice—but the layout threw me off.
There’s a large shower right in the middle of the room, so it ends up feeling like 40% shower and 60% room.
The space itself is on the smaller side, and those bed frame edges? You might walk into them once or twice.
You can literally watch your partner shower from bed… if that’s your thing.
On the other side, past the open sink area, is the toilet closet. The sliding door (at least in our room) had a mind of its own and kept opening—and there’s no fan, so… do with that what you will.
Layout & Functionality
The room could’ve been more thoughtfully designed.
There were limited functional spaces:
no desk
no real vanity/work area
What you do get:
a side table by the window with two chairs
a wide headboard that doubles as a shelf
a wooden shoe rack that can also work as storage or a bench
Also:
no peephole on the door
Amenities & Details
The AC was bussin.
The TV felt like an afterthought for us, but it’s a nice modern touch with streaming services available (just remember to log out).
The lighting setup had a lot of variety depending on your mood.
The mini fridge was stocked with premium sodas and spirits—and ours liked making a bit of noise at night. If you enjoy white noise, you might not mind it.
They also provide:
a banana leaf–woven hat
2 robes
2 slippers
a branded umbrella
a security box
The bathroom was stocked with L’Occitane products, which felt a little fancy.
As for the hotel itself -
There’s also a wellness room, meeting room, hair salon, and pool.
The wellness space offers Pilates and workout sessions with trainers—worth checking ahead if that’s your thing.
Food & Drinks
The hotel leans into a Latin-Asian fusion concept.
Kumo (rooftop): cocktails + elevated dishes
Awwa (pool bar): ceviche, raw bar, and beachside drinks
The pool is small…
…but the view makes up for it. Turquoise water peeking through the palm trees.
If you would like a full breakdown of Kumo, their rooftop restaurant, I had breakfast and dinner you can read here.
Location & Beach Access
We were steps away from the beach.
The road is a dead end—and I liked that. It felt secure.
Once you take that short walk, beach service is great.
The staff provide:
chairs
umbrellas
towels
side tables
It’s a different pace than pre-set beach setups, and I actually appreciated that.
Service
The service was great across the board.
From:
bellmen
concierge
beach staff
bar staff
housekeeping
Everyone was welcoming, accommodating, and approachable.
Things To Know
A few things I noticed:
no room service
no phone in the room
communication is done via text
So if you’re trying to fully disconnect… this might not be ideal.
Breakfast Situation
They offer breakfast requests through hanging door tags.
But:
no pen is provided
no stationery in the room
So you’ll need to ask or come prepared.
Also—it needs to be submitted by 7am.
Sustainability Touches
The hotel includes subtle eco-friendly efforts:
recycled design elements
low-energy lighting
refillable water bottles
vegan toiletries
On the 5th floor, there’s also a water refill station—which I thought was a nice touch.
Final Rating
Location: 9/10
Comfort: 7.5/10
Service: 9/10
Value: 6/10
Overall: 7.8/10
Why I Gave It a 7.8/10
I give Aire de O:Live a 7.8/10 because as lovely as the service, location, and restaurants were—they were such a hit—there were a few things that brought the experience down.
The room layout, the lack of room service, and some of the amenities felt like an afterthought.
That being said, the bed? So comfortable. It was not hard to fall asleep at all—I may or may not have left a few drool marks on those plush pillows.
The space itself felt small for a two-person stay. I think it would’ve been less of a complaint if the shower was maybe 20% smaller—but I understand it was intentionally designed to be a highlight of the room.
I don’t give the hotel a bad review—I think part of it comes down to the room choice we made.
There were also a few small inconveniences:
Elevators during peak times were a bit slow
No peephole on the door, which felt a little off from a security standpoint
Our window couldn’t be opened at all—it was completely sealed
Kumo was a standout.
The pool is small, but still fun, and the view of the beach makes it a whole vibe.
But if I had to choose, I’d absolutely take the beach service across the street—the setup, the waves, the overall experience… that’s where I’d spend most of my time.
Final Thought
I’d stay here again—but I’d definitely choose a different room layout.
If you value aesthetics, service, and location—but can overlook a few design quirks then this might be exactly your kind of stay.
