Kumo Rooftop Puerto Rico Review: Food, Views & Is It Worth It

If the hotel makes the trip… the food defines it.

Kumo — Aire de O:live Rooftop Restaurant Review

Kumo is a rooftop restaurant and bar steps away from the beach in Isla Verde, San Juan.

It’s located in the Aire de O:live hotel—and if you haven’t yet, you can read my experience at the hotel here.

It’s one of the two food and drinks options at the hotel.

Since it was so conveniently situated, we ended up having Kumo for both breakfast and dinner.

Let me walk you through each experience.

Quick Info

Location: Carolina, Isla Verde, San Juan

Inside: Aire De O:live

Best for: sunset dinner, date night

Reservation: recommended for dinner

Breakfast

When we hopped off the elevator to the top floor, I was met with a lovely breeze.

To the left, there are stairs that lead to one of the pools in the hotel—which, now that I think about it, felt a little random.

To the right, you’re greeted by the hostess stand.

There are two sides of the restaurant:

  • one with the bar and mostly high-top seating

  • the other with larger group seating and half-moon cream leather booths

The layout is open, with the kitchen exposed—you can watch the chefs work their magic.

The vibes were cool, bright, and open.

And with the full view of the Atlantic Ocean at your seat—breathtaking.

A good view, your person and breakfast, with the warmth of the sun hugging your skin?

Yeah… that part was hard to beat.

We were seated nearly immediately and the menu of the restaurant was linked via QR code on the table. We ended up seated at one of the high-tops and when i say this view was taking me away? the ocean horizon going on and blending with the sky-didnt know where it started and ended. the white noise of the ocean waves hitting the shore. it was hot and the sun was beaming, thankfully the restaurant had these shades that abosorbed the light but still shown the shaded illumination of the sun. it was a bit windy and i was worried about my hat being so high up, i believe we’re around 10 or more floors of the hotel.

Our waitress Crystal was great. she was informative, kind, and efficient.

The menu was on the smaller side with a smaller menu selection, but 1-2 standout dishes like the Mignon and eggs or the Salmon Okonomiyaki.

What We Started With

We actually had breakfast at Kumo twice.

The first day -

We started with:

  • an iced latte

  • an iced cucumber drink

It was a mix of green tea, cucumber, lemon, and ginger.

If you’re into something earthy, slightly sour, and refreshing—you’d probably like it.

I liked it.

It reminded me of a more elevated, healthier version of the cucumber lemonade from The Cheesecake Factory.

What We Ordered

  • Plain French toast

  • Scrambled eggs

  • Bacon

  • Duck with waffles (but they’re actually pancakes) with orange marmalade

  • Breakfast potatoes.

My Honest Take

Take my review with a grain of salt—we all have different taste buds—but I hope this helps you decide.

  • Scrambled eggs: mediocre, nothing to write home about. Was it bad? no. Have i had better, yes.

  • French toast: no real flavor, and it lacked that crisp edge

  • Bacon: good, but nothing memorable, also still confused why it was on a stick. Which made the crispy bacon taste more like brittle bacon.

But the duck?

That was the moment.

  • Duck + pancakes:
The duck had great flavor, and the orange marmalade added a nice natural sweetness to balance the richness.
The pancakes brought that soft, carby element that just worked. The flavor didn’t try to overpower anything but rather elevate the duck and orange lovingly.

It was so good, we came back and ordered it again for breakfast the next few days later.

  • The potatoes: wow.
Crispy on the outside, soft hot fluffy potat on the inside, with that salty parmesan finish… addictive.

If you’re a potato lover like me, these will not disappoint.

but when the night falls…

Dinner

Kumo transforms into something else.

We got there after it was already dark, but if you can make a reservation around sunset—I imagine that would be unreal.

The atmosphere shifts into something more:

  • romantic

  • moody

  • a little sexy

You can hear the waves in the background while a funky playlist plays—artists like Groove da Praia and Amarion & Neeus.

The exposed kitchen almost becomes part of the decor at night, glowing and adding to the ambiance.

And the bar?

A whole vibe on its own, with a wide collection of spirits.

The whole setting is perfect for date night.

Drinks

He ordered a Moscow Mule.

I ordered a Mulatita, which is a mocktail with:

  • black tea

  • lavender

  • lime

  • ginger beer

There’s also a cocktail version with aged rum

What We Ordered

My partner and I like to say we don’t do family-style…

…but we definitely do.

We shared:

  • Picanha Wagyu

  • Brussels sprouts

  • Urichimai (rice)

  • Potatoes (again… because they hit)

  • Duck leg chaufa

The duck leg is similar to the duck from breakfast, but this time served with Peruvian-style fried rice.

Dinner Review

  • Wagyu: Cooked perfectly medium, with a great marinade and a beautiful char from the grill. The meat was tender and juicy, and the flavor of the marinade came through in every bite—it definitely wasn’t shy.

Brussels Sprouts: Great char, a nice bite, and a slight citrus sweetness. If you love Brussels sprouts like I do, these are addictive—I nearly finished the whole side on my own.

Rice: It was… rice. Not much to say. Not bad, not great—just there.

Duck Leg Chaufa: Even better than breakfast. This Peruvian-style fried rice was so flavorful, and the egg pieces were like soft little pillows—such a small detail, but super memorable.

What I’d Try Next Time

If I went back—and I most definitely would—I’d want to try the:

  • Korobuta pork belly

  • Octopus ceviche

  • Pear budín (Puerto Rican bread pudding)

  • Matcha chocolate cake

just to name a few, because those all sound too good to skip.

Final Thoughts

Kumo is one of those places where:

  • the atmosphere

  • the view

  • and a menu of standout dishes

really carry the experience.

Expect to spend around $25-$40 per person for breakfast, and closer to $60-$100+ per person for dinner depending on what you order.

If I had to choose, Kumo for dinner is way more worth your money.

If you can, book around sunset, the view alone is worth it to experience.

Would I go back?

Yes—especially for dinner and sunset.

The duck? Don’t even overthink it. Give it a try.

Overall, Kumo felt underrated. If you’re looking for tasty food with an even more memorable view, this gets a tasty-tasty honor from me.

The menu is unique and explorative, but still has that mass appeal where you feel more intrigued than intimidated. I definitely found myself going back and forth between dishes—that’s how you know it’s good.

Honestly, if they offered a tasting menu with all their dishes, I don’t think you’d be disappointed.

The chefs and team really hit it out of the park with their Latin and Asian fusion cuisine.
